Polybutylene - Selected Material and Property Aspects [PB]

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 1982 York

Kemp

The properties of polybutylene as a pipe material are discussed, with particular reference to creep, bending moment, bending radius, oxygen diffusion, burst hoop stress as a function of time, and lifetime estimation.
Its properties are compared with those of polypropylene and cross-linked polyethylene.

Polybutylene 1s member of the same family of polyolefins as polyethylene and polypropylene. It is prepared from butene-1l, and must not be confused with polyisobutene, which is a rubber prepared from isobutene.

Polybutylene was first prepared by Natta in 1954 during his classic researches on a family of new catalysts which comprised addition compounds and mixtures of aluminium, titanium and magnesium alkyl and alkoxy halides.
